The original South Norwalk train station was constructed on this site in the 1890s. When the New Haven bound (eastbound) waiting area was refurbished and modernized in 1994 with the help of the architectural firm of Sullivan/Jamieson, considerable effort was made to recreate many historic features of the 19th century structure. The original westbound structure was demolished to make way for construction of the current modern waiting room and parking garage complex, which opened in January 1996.

The Victorian-style eastbound waiting area offers ample seating, telephones, vending machines and a dry cleaners outlet; and provides ready access to the main terminal building via a bright, security-monitored tunnel that is accessible by stairs or elevator. The eastbound building is also host to a City of Norwalk Community Police Station. Commuters may be dropped off or picked up outside the eastbound waiting area.

The New York bound (westbound) portion of the station offers a large, bright waiting area with multiple exits to the platform through a glass-walled arch, allowing commuters to stay inside, sheltered from inclement weather, until the train arrives. The main waiting area also features a Metro North ticket office, a concession and telephones. The lower level houses the central security station, ATM machine, and access to the connecting tunnel; the parking office is located behind the security office, just through the doors to the first floor garage. Six levels of parking are accessible via elevator or stairs. Commuters may be dropped off or picked up at the 1st floor State Street entrance. In addition, there is a 15-minute parking area adjacent to the State Street entrance

When we set out to redesign our train station, we wanted the best of both worlds: to provide all the modern amenities while preserving the historic charm of the original Victorian structure.

The new South Norwalk train station is a full-service, handicapped-accessible facility, offering the features most important to today's commuter:

Bright, comfortable waiting rooms, with easy access to the train platform and numerous on-site amenities, including a coffee concession, a dry cleaners, and ATM banking;

Ample parking in our well-lighted, six-story parking garage, which is security monitored and protected from the elements;

A state-of-the-art security system that provides electronic and personnel monitoring of the facility and garage around the clock;

A clean, bright, security-monitored connecting tunnel that lets commuters move between eastbound and westbound sides quickly, easily and safely.•
